Feb 18-21

This week in writing, students worked on their editing and revising skills.  We are looking for the proper placement of commas and periods, as well as how to add adverbs and adjectives to our sentences in order to create stronger and more detailed paragraphs.  When reading, we are working on identifying main ideas, supporting details and new vocabulary, as well as recording ideas after reading to build independence and be successful participants in literature circles.

We wrapped up our multiplication and division unit and are preparing to start building our understanding of fractions.  We will learn how to split a whole into equal parts and start comparing fractions with the same numerator or the same denominators.

Through Science, students will begin investigating the concepts of light and shadow.  We explore the concepts of transparent, translucent and opaque and look at how light always travels in a straight line unless it is reflected or refracted.

In Social Studies, students had opportunities to explore various artifacts that the Indigenous Peoples from Alberta's past (specifically Blackfoot Nation) made from the buffalo.  We looked at how the various Indigenous Nations lived off the land prior to the colonization of Canada.  We will continue to build on these concepts as we start to learn about the impact of the European Settlers and the Fur Trade that began in the early 1500s.

We also had fun in gym celebrating the 100th day of school.  Students had turns to try different stations were we did 100 exercises!
